Info

Kill Your Idols: With his third album, *Oh, How Beautiful Life Is*, Viennese singer-songwriter Felix Kramer has finally broken free. Kramer finds fulfillment in songs about envy, the pressure to succeed, and the meditative rejection of supposed capitalist constraints. While the inspiration on Kramer’s previous albums, *Wahrnehmungssache* (2018) and *Alles gut* (2020), was still audibly rooted in the classics, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, and Jacques Brel have—for now—ceased to be obvious influences.

You can certainly sense that Kramer, a trained guitarist, has gone through the classic songwriting school, that he also studied composition, and thus knows pretty much exactly what he’s doing—but he translates the insights he’s gained in this way in an extremely original and individual way. Kramer has left overly obvious choruses behind; he combines folk guitars with drum machines and influences from musicians like Mac Miller, mixing spoken word with sung passages.

Kramer is a keen observer who doesn’t exclude himself from the equation; he recognizes and exposes life’s lies—including his own. Time and again, his focus is on tracking down the beauty in the gloom, no matter how well hidden it is. In doing so, he doesn’t deny dark sides or tensions, but pulls them right into the heart of his songs—without weighing them down further. Kramer’s Viennese wit lends these songs a lightness that suits them exceptionally well.

The single “Roadtrip,” released in 2024—like his current album, also co-produced with producer and multi-instrumentalist Max Wintersperger—shows Kramer from an even brighter side. The upbeat country song winds its way through the sunny landscape with subtle observations about the joys and struggles of such a vacation, evoking a freedom-loving attitude toward life.

Work on the next album has already begun behind the scenes; songs are being written, tested live, reworked, and are slowly taking their final form. “I’m pretty slow,” says Kramer. “I keep refining the lyrics, asking myself over and over: What do I really want to say? Eventually, I end up with a distilled version—sometimes just a single sentence that I really like—and from that sentence, I try to build a story.” We can’t wait to hear it.
