Sprouting, blooming, wilting—what would a day in the life of a flower be like if it existed in the life of a woman? Going beyond clichés, gender roles, and traditional expectations, this evening not only explores themes such as love, relationships, and the complex challenges women face today, but also, among other things, liberates Clara Schumann from the archives. With a top-notch cast, actress Patricia Aulitzky (known, among other things, from the film “Falco,” the series “113,” and the Tyrolean crime series) joins forces with the Trio Frühstück to shatter the romantic image of the muse and motherhood. “Ungezähmt” is not a traditional reading with musical accompaniment, but rather a symbiosis in which words and sound function as equal partners: Thus, Marlene Streeruwitz’s dissecting, rhythmically choppy language meets the restless romanticism of Robert Schumann’s “Phantasiestücke,” while Rebecca Solnit’s feminist manifesto “Unseemly Behavior” forms the perfect counterpoint to the uncompromising world premiere by Katharina Roth (“so nicht”), composed specifically for the quartet. When Judith Varga’s music begins to “crumble” sonically, it finds its literary echo in the subtle fissures of Leslie Jamison’s “Splinters.” The existential question of motherhood and the associated search for a new identity in Sheila Heti’s work clashes with Clara Schumann’s musical turmoil, before Jenny Joseph’s humorous manifesto on aging, in contrast to Simone de Beauvoir’s earlier reflections on the subject, flows into the triumphant late works of Johannes Brahms. From the first “Womb” sounds in deep darkness to the final fade-out, a pull is created that reveals that the true nature of the wildflower lies not in stillness, but in the unstoppable urge to break through the asphalt of convention and into the light.
