Info

Artistic whistling is a quintessentially Viennese tradition that enjoyed a heyday in the last quarter of the 19th century. Artistic whistlers are people who can whistle as complex a melody as possible in various pitches without any technical aids. The Vienna Schrammel Quartet performed with folk singers, fiddlers, and art whistlers, who were so popular with the audience that they were showered with tips. Vienna’s most famous art whistler was the fiaker driver Johann Tranquillini (1855–1895), known as Baron Jean, whose most famous fan was Crown Prince Rudolf. Austria’s last professional female artistic whistler was Jeanette Baroness Lips von Lipstrill (1924–2005). Nikolaus Habjan has revived the tradition of art whistling and is today one of the world’s finest art whistlers. With Viennese charm, he guides the audience through a highly entertaining evening, bringing this virtuoso art form back to life in a fascinating way.
