On September 29, William Shakespeare’s *Rome + Juliet*: A Film in Concert will celebrate its world premiere at the legendary Sydney Opera House. Thirty years after the release of Luhrmann’s film, this co-production by GEA Live, Disney Concerts, and director Baz Luhrmann offers a pop-cultural phenomenon that combines cinema, theater, rock music, an orchestra, and the film’s visuals into an immersive experience. In the fall of 2027, this unique live-to-film production will also come to Europe, where it will make stops in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Vienna, and Berlin, among other cities.

As in Sydney, William Shakespeare’s *Romeo + Juliet* Film in Concert will screen the film on a cinema-sized screen with the original dialogue, accompanied by a 12-member ensemble that will perform the film’s score live, perfectly synchronized with the film. The ensemble consists of rock and orchestral musicians, including vocalists, synthesizers, and a DJ, who blend the film’s classic storytelling with a contemporary sound. The film’s songs are thus presented in fresh interpretations that bridge the film’s strong ’90s identity with the present. In addition to the prominent love theme “Kissing You” by Des’ree, the soundtrack features songs such as The Cardigans’ “Lovefood, ” Radiohead’s “Talk Show Host, ” Garbage’s “#1 Crush,” and others by artists like Everclear, Gavin Friday, One Inch Punch, Butthole Surfers, Kym Mazelle, Quindon Tarver & Libera, Mundy, Stina Nordenstam, and The Wannadies, and was released by Capitol Records in 1996. Additional film music by composers Nelle Hooper, Craig Armstrong, and Marius de Vries was released in 1997 as the second part of the official soundtrack. Inspired by Verona Beach, California—the film’s setting—the production immerses its audience in iconic visual elements: from the Montague and Capulet family crests to candles, neon crosses, red curtains, flowers, and an altar-like DJ booth.

“William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet” was originally released on November 1, 1996, as a reimagining of the legendary 1596 play and immediately became a number-one hit in the U.S. Today, Baz Luhrmann’s film drama is considered an absolute statement piece and, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as Romeo and Juliet, features an iconic duo who went on to win numerous individual awards in the years that followed. The film won BAFTA Awards for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Music, and Best Production Design, and was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Production Design category at the Academy Awards. In addition to an MTV Movie Award for Claire Danes’ performance as Best Female Actress, the German Film and Media Rating Agency awarded the production the rating “valuable.”
