Info
Wolfgang Gerold creates a musical topography of old Vienna through songs by his father, Hans Gerold, as well as works by Hermann Leopoldi and Rudolf Sieczynski. His interpretation avoids excessive sentimentality, and it is precisely this that lends it credibility and expressiveness.
Willi Konstantin proves to be a sensitive and stylistically accomplished accompanist at the piano. A native of Greece, he impresses with a keen sense of tempo, dynamics, and musical nuances. He lends the songs a warm, almost chamber-music-like structure that never intrudes on the foreground.
Manfred Antonius Distel provides an effective counterpoint with his recitation. With texts by Anton Krutisch, Trude Marzik, Ernst Kein, and others, he brings to the stage that laconic Viennese linguistic culture that oscillates between humor, observations of everyday life, and quiet social criticism. He captivates with precisely placed verbal wit and quiet intensity.
The program “Viennese Songs & Viennese Stories” is much more than a nostalgic look back. It is a loving celebration of a cultural tradition that uniquely intertwines music, language, and that unmistakable Viennese melancholy.
