The Early Years

The roots of Black gospel and spirituals date back to the early 18th century. At that time, African slaves composed their first English-language hymns in the foreign land of America. Back then, they still held onto their own unique moral values and religious beliefs.

The History of the Ensemble

For nearly twenty years, we traveled throughout the United States to proclaim the good news in churches and theaters. During that time, I had the privilege of experiencing some of the best gospel singers America has to offer. But no matter where my travels took me, I always kept my ears open.

In my own congregation in Harlem, a dream took shape: to bring together some of the best American gospel singers as a group so they could share their spiritual fire with our brothers and sisters in Europe. Thanks to the help of our producers and promoters, we are now able to make this dream a reality.

When the singers of the ensemble “The Christmas Gospel” raise their crystal-clear voices to the highest registers—both at the beginning and at the end of the concert—a shiver regularly runs through the audience. That is the spirit of gospel—a comment often heard about “The Christmas Gospel” performance.

But gospel classics such as “Oh Happy Day,” “Amazing Grace,” and

“When the Saints” are, of course, part of the ensemble’s repertoire, which impresses above all with the balance between the female and male voices.

Gospel—classics and modern soul ballads—emotion and spirit come together here to create a fascinating experience. The diverse experiences that The Christmas Gospel has gained on stage, as well as their well-known knack for selecting singers, lead us to expect sold-out churches and concert halls on The Christmas Gospel’s upcoming tour—following over 500 concerts in Germany and Austria from 2000 to 2024.

It’s a concert—but the atmosphere of the famous Black Church services allows the audience to become part of the “community” during the major 2026 tour of Austria. It is the joyful contemplativeness that makes these “Christmas Gospel”concerts an extraordinary event.
