The young officers Guglielmo and Ferrando boast to their older friend Don Alfonso about the faithfulness of their fiancées. Don Alfonso, however, believes that all women are unpredictable in love. The two officers agree to a wager to test their fiancées and pretend they have been called to the front. They return as foreign nobles, but fail to tempt their fiancées into an affair. They believe they have already won the bet, but Don Alfonso thinks it’s too soon to tell.

The title means “That’s How All Women Are” or “The School for Lovers.” Director Lotte de Beer, who is staging the production with set design by Richard Peduzzi, comments: “Actually, this play should be called Così fan tutti. All the characters share responsibility for the bitter comedy we witness here. That’s why it’s less a school for lovers and more an apt study of humanity. There’s always something implausible about them—unless the disguises represent the world in which the characters live. Perhaps the entire *Così* takes place in a clown’s world. And if that’s the case, then the question is: Will the couples be able to sustain this clown’s world until the very end?”
