Info
A true cult production, this classic about English class society, the power of language, and the battle between the sexes tells the story of how the phonetics professor Dr. Higgins transforms the flower seller Eliza Doolittle into a lady of high society. The key to this somewhat questionable social advancement? Language! Through rigorous speech training, Eliza is supposed to shed her “lower-class” origins and become a new creature shaped by Higgins. She is then proudly presented at a ball. But does Higgins also manipulate Eliza’s feelings through language? And is it really possible to slip into another social class as if it were a new item of clothing? The witty lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and the hit potential of Frederick Loewe’s music, with songs such as “The Rain in Spain” (“Es grünt so grün”) and “I Could Have Danced All Night” (“Ich hätt’ getanzt heut Nacht”), give the story additional depth, humor, and an important touch of tongue-in-cheek charm.
