Chicago, 1920s: Roxie Hart kills her lover and ends up in prison, where she meets not only the ambitious double murderer Velma Kelly, but also “Mama” Morton, who knows exactly how to play the game of power, intrigue, and glamour. With the help of lawyer Billy Flynn and tabloid reporter Mary Sunshine, Roxie is turned into a media icon. Roxie’s star shines unstoppably—if it weren’t for Velma, who feels cheated out of her well-deserved fame… And the next scandal, already waiting just around the corner.
After more than 50 years, *Chicago* remains one of the iconic Broadway musicals that brings together everything that makes this genre so fascinating: a story about fame, ambition, and the temptations of the showbiz world, featuring world-famous songs—most notably “All That Jazz”—and rousing dance numbers. Director Lotte de Beer, who is bringing the show to the stage together with the Cuban-born, multi-award-winning choreographer Arielle Smith, calls Chicago an example of “Brechtian storytelling that shows just how much we love be entertained by stories that tell us about the evil in humanity. We let ourselves be seduced, inspired by music, jazz, and dance—and the very next moment, we actually stumble over a dead body.”
