Paris in the 19th century, the Latin Quarter, Christmas Eve. While everyone is pouring into the streets to celebrate, things look very different in a drafty attic apartment. Four poor artist friends live here together in a bohemian shared apartment: the painter Marcello, the musician Schaunard, the philosopher Colline, and the poet Rodolfo. They have big dreams—even though they’re constantly short on money. But they won’t let that spoil their spirits. They’re young, the world is their oyster—and Paris is a big city. So off to Café Momus! Only Rodolfo stays behind to finish writing an article. When his neighbor Mimì knocks on the door, he immediately falls for her, but their tender love is soon overshadowed by Mimì’s poverty and illness.
Puccini’s opera is one of the greatest masterpieces of all time. Heart and heartbreak meet precisely drawn scenes of the precarious artistic life of the time, a precise analysis of urban society caught between acceleration and isolation, and psychologically nuanced characters. Harry Kupfer’s production of this opera premiered at the Volksoper in 1984 and has since been revived numerous times due to its popularity. “One is fascinated to see how skillfully Kupfer worked back then, how perfectly each character is portrayed,” wrote the Kronen Zeitung in 2022, and Der Standard recognized it as “timelessly great musical theater.” Now the legendary production returns.
