Ronja is born on a night of wild thunderstorms. She is the daughter of the bandit chief Mattis and his wife Lovis, and the pride and joy of the Mattis gang. But Mattisburg is no longer the stronghold it once was: a bolt of lightning has split it in two. And, of all places, the rival Borka clan has taken up residence in the other half. Mattis is seething with rage. But his daughter Ronja has no intention of continuing her fathers’ age-old feud. Instead, she befriends Birk, the son of their arch-enemy. When the conflict between their parents escalates, the two make a courageous decision: they flee to the bear’s den. There, deep in the forest, a summer full of freedom begins, surrounded by mysterious gray gnomes, dangerous wild witches, and strange rumbling gnomes.
Astrid Lindgren’s *Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter* is a timeless plea for tolerance and the courage to go one’s own way. Stephan Lacks’ stage adaptation for the Volksoper is a grand adventure about growing up and the power of reconciliation. Ruth Brauer-Kvam’s production brings the Mattis Forest to life on stage as atmospheric musical theater. The music, composed by Kyrre Kvam and orchestrated by Keren Kagarlitsky, captures both the rustling of the woods and the wild energy of the bandits.
