Lotte de Beer stages Mozart’s famous opera as a fascinating journey into the imagination of a young person. Using imaginative videos, she brings a world straight out of a sketchbook to life—and takes the singers on a journey through dreamscapes.
The story begins quite simply, almost like an adventure novel. A young prince is sent by a queen to rescue her daughter from the clutches of a dark ruler. At the prince’s side: a strange birdcatcher. Coming to their aid: numerous magical devices, including the eponymous Magic Flute. And all around them, wild animals, trials to overcome, and tests of fire and water. But this wouldn’t be Schikaneder and Mozart if it didn’t quickly become clear that the story is much more complex. For good and evil, light and darkness, soon become almost impossible to distinguish from one another. And the bonds between parents and children are more complicated than they initially appear.
