“Happy is the one who forgets what cannot be changed!” It is probably the most popular, and certainly the most Viennese, of all operettas: Johann Strauss’s immortal *Die Fledermaus*. Wild parties, erotic mix-ups, conspiracies, intrigues, and a generous dose of schadenfreude: the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Operetta offers double-entendre entertainment set to the rhythm of the waltz. And when the social facade crumbles too much, you can always blame it all on the effects of the champagne. “In the fiery flow of the vines,” it’s easy to go a little overboard.
The Volksoper is considered the most “Viennese” opera house in the city. So it’s no surprise that Johann Strauss’s masterpiece is practically part of the family heirlooms here. No other work has been performed more often at the Volksoper. At the start of Lotte de Beer’s tenure as artistic director, the production was gently refreshed; since then, a female court usher named Frosch has provided a fresh perspective on this well-known piece.
