Everyone wants to write about the coolest band—at least those who know what’s possible with a lineup like this. This isn’t about pleasing others, but about friction: jazz in all its vitality meets the sonic philosophy of modernism. Origin isn’t asserted, but questioned—and reinvented. Compositions are created without a safety net, performed without a safety net. A reckless personal style here isn’t a risk, but a statement. Music that doesn’t ask for permission—it simply happens.

It is important to the Janus Ensemble that music not merely serve as a musical uniform for various social groups—such as classical music consumption for the middle class—but rather use its stirring power to reflect on the unsettling signs of our times. All too often, music caught between precariousness and high culture presents itself as apolitical and merely delivers what is expected of it: the soundtrack for burying one’s head in the sand.

A distinctive feature of the Janus Ensemble is its focus on works at the intersection of contemporary music and jazz.
