Despite all the warnings, and laced up in a dirndl, she heads to a place that is an ordeal for many and heaven for others: Munich’s Oktoberfest. This offers plenty of food for thought about the endearing and less flattering similarities between Austria and Bavaria. Above all, however, it’s a wildly funny descent into hell—a paradise of excess—as can only be imagined at the Festival of All Festivals. People don’t just drink—they get drunk; they eat and carouse, stagger, vomit, and lose consciousness—all in the euphoria that this is exactly how it’s supposed to be.
